PROJECT: Sand Blasting Cabinet

Let there be Light!
I purchased a florescent light fixture that came with a 75watt bulb, but will handle up to 150watts if needed.

I originally was going to mount it flush in the center of the ceiling, but decided I didn't want to be blinded every time I looked up. It came with a swivel mount on one end, so I mounted it to the ceiling near the front (above the view window), and tilted it down toward the center of the work area.

A Shelf made from Bread Trays
Actually, as you saw in some of the previous pictures, there is a wood frame that supports the bread trays. I wanted to be able to shoot the media and have it fall down the chute, and I wanted something that could be removed easily enough for taller parts, but strong enough for heavier car parts to rest on.

I thought about using a screen material, but for my needs it's a little to flimsy. Plus, the bread trays was given to me by one of my business accounts, so it seemed like the logical choice. You can see the catch bucket below as well.

Lower Doors Support
I added a "T" support for the double doors below. Probably not needed as the cabinet is very solid any way. But I have been known to over do things, so why stop now!

You can also see the amount of space I have below. I can put around four 5 gallon buckets, and a few bags of sand with no problems.

The Exterior
Here's a shot of the outside. The outside is sealed with a polyurethane I had left over from another project

I added a couple of safety clasp to the upper door and one to the bottom to keep the doors shut, and my kids out. I've caught them a couple of times playing hide and seek inside the cabinet. Locks can be added to these clasp if needed, or just turn the center arm to keep them close.

View Window & Sleeves
I used vending machine plexiglas windows for a view window. Since they aren't very big, I wound up placing three next to each other to form a 13"x 32" window. The reason I went this route is because they are free to me, meaning I can replace them when ever needed and not have to soak any more money into this thing.

The holes for the arms were cut out and the tops of tupperware bowls were cut off and placed in the holes and sealed with caulking. I stapled a pair of levi legs to the door to act as the sleeves, and will attach a pair of heavy duty rubber gloves to the ends of the levis later.

If you look at the previous picture you will notice you can still use the lids for the tupperware bowls to close off the cabinet to help keep moisture, critters, etc. out.

It's Finished!
Will almost... I still have to add the weather-stripping around the inside edge of the door jam. and weather seal the exterior cabinet since it will remain outside under my carport. I still have to drill the holes for the return line and air compressor line as well.

Anyway that's about it!
Material & Price List
This list may not be completely accurate, but I tried to hang on to my receipts, and keep tabs on what I used. I'm sure if you decide to build one for yourself, you will probably want to modify it to your needs anyway, so this is basically just to give you a general idea of cost and materials.
